Join us and one of the most experienced sloth veterinarians (Dr. Janet Sandi Carmiol) for lunch and a 4 hour seminar on sloth husbandry and veterinary care.     

This is geared towards veterinary facilities, zoos, sanctuaries, students  and sloth owners and enthusiasts.

Topics: 

-Nutrition

-Zoological habitats (size, temperature, humidity, plants)

-Veterinary issues (acceptable medication, potty habits, fecal transplants, treating an ill sloth)

-Handling a sloth 

-Conservation/rehab efforts and challenges in their natural habitat 

The date of the class will be 1/11 10am-2pm with lunch served at 12:00 pm.

Dr. Janet Sandi Carmiol

Dr. Janet Sandi is the Toucan Rescue Ranch’s Veterinarian Director. TRR maintains an active sloth rehab and release program in Costa Rica. Dr. Sandi has also worked with sloths in the wild and at several other rescues for over 15 years, including significant observational field work. She obtained her DMV from Escuela de Medicina y Cirugía Veterinaria San Francisco de Asís in 2006. During her studies, she worked with Aviarios Sloth Sanctuary and interned with the Dallas World Aquarium in December (exotics). Janet also interned with the Wimberley Veterinary Clinic in Texas. She opened her private veterinary clinic in Curridabat, San José in 2008, and became a consultant to the zoo in Playa Bonita, Moín, Limón (Paradero Ecotour) in 2008. At TRR, she conducts examinations, medical logs, maintains MINAE procedures and protocols, and oversees surgeries. She manages the overall health of all of the animals in Toucan Rescue Ranch’s clinic and works closely with the veterinarian supervisor, at TRR in Costa Rica.  Dr. Sandi also has experience with Tamandua, Hookbills  and Toucans and will be available for questions after the seminar.
